Oxford Shirt Manufacturer — Basket Weave & Button-Down

The oxford shirt is the most useful garment in a menswear range because it works in almost every context, and the reason is its basket weave. Two yarns pass over and under each other rather than one over one, which gives the cloth a slightly textured surface, more breathability, and the ability to soften with washing instead of wearing out. Getting it right comes down to the collar and the placket: a button-down that rolls properly and a placket that stays flat are what a customer actually experiences.

Frequently asked questions

Should the collar be fused or unfused?
That is a genuine design decision, not a quality one. A fused collar is crisper and flatter and holds a sharp edge, which suits formal corporate shirts. An unfused collar is softer, rolls rather than sits flat, and ages better with washing, which suits a casual button-down. Tell us how the shirt will be worn and we will advise; we can produce either.
Why does an oxford shirt soften over time?
Because of the basket weave. The yarn structure allows the fibres to relax slightly with each wash rather than being locked tight as in a poplin. That is a feature — a good oxford gets more comfortable as it ages, and it is why customers repurchase. It is also why an oxford and a poplin shirt feel different from day one.
Is a non-iron finish worth specifying?
It depends on the market. Easy-care and non-iron finishes are a major selling point in some markets and carry no premium perception in others. They do add a finishing process and a cost step. For corporate and uniform programmes it is usually worth it; for a fashion-positioned shirt it can make the cloth feel stiffer than a customer expects.
Can you match the fit of a shirt I already sell?
Yes. Send us the shirt with its measurements taken flat, or a full size chart. We will grade it and produce a counter sample so you can compare the two before bulk. Woven shirt fit is easier to match than knit fit because the fabric does not have the recovery behaviour of jersey.
